Reimagining Spaces

Urban Design Studio (Architecture 499A) asks students to transform a contemporary urban site within the historic city center of Rome into a multi-functional building complex with an open urban space design. The 10,000+ sq.ft. scale of each project must thoughtfully address sustainability and environmental issue.  Students collaborated in teams to present a final design that highlights university design elements that imbue a global understanding of architecture.

"Testaccio Reborn". Katherine Morgante, Ashley Kirk, and Eileen Li. ARCH 499A. Spring 2024.

The wonderful thing about having architecture students to teach, in Rome, is that the students' transformation is evident in the projects that they produce. There is always a transformation and there is always the proof of it in the work they take home.

A Paradigm of Urbanity

In Architectural and Urban Analysis (ARCH 499B), students needed create a graphic composition that merged a specific historic roman building or architectural site into an aesthetically appealing, symbolic representation of a subjective experience of Roman architecture. This course proposes an investigation of the historical roots of the “Modern language of Architecture” as a means to establish an operative bridge between critical architectural analysis and architectural design in the contemporary world.

It’s really hard to design something here in Rome. But our student’s take on the challenge and it’s really impressive to see. We, as professors, were really pleased this semester by the high-quality work of all the projects, but most of all, we were impressed by our student’s courage to engage in this kind of design work, and to do it so successfully.

Congratulations to all our Spring 2024 students! Their work demonstrated exceptional thought and skill. We hope to see them again soon! Alla prossima!
